No matter what type of educational program you are in, there is a good chance that you will take at least one class that requires you to write a research paper before you graduate. The topic that you may research varies widely depending upon your area of study. Some fields of study naturally lend themselves to interesting subjects of research. For example, someone attending cooking schools might research the up-and-coming trend of "blind dining" or "dark dining". This is where you go to an upscale restaurant where the room that you are dining in is pitch black and your waiters are blind. You eat your food in the dark, gaining an appreciation for what it would be like to be blind while tasting an amazing meal in a whole new way.
Some cities lend themselves better than others to first hand research for school. Students at the Cooking Institute of Chicago would probably find it easier to find a blind dining restaurant in their area than would students of Scottsdale Culinary Institute. Either way, though, it's interesting research. Certainly more interesting than what you might research in other programs (like math programs) although what interests different people does vary as widely as degree programs do.
